happy new year!
A whole new year! Time to start blogging again. It has been a hectic past few months. I had heart surgery in October of last year, which resulted in an 8 week recovery, but I am back to my old self as of recently. School is about to start again, and I have been working at a nursery for a few weeks. I love working with children! Maybe I won't be too busy this semester...although I am taking an A/P class Anyway, I will try to blog every now and then when I find the time!

covered in cats
During my past stays in Japan, I have discovered an entirely new genre of
manga. Manga about pets and their everyday lives. More specifically, ねこ
まんが or cat manga is, I have noticed, very popular. I have collected quite
a bit of neko manga over the past few years. Some of my favorites are in
magazine issues compiled of different manga artists and stories about their
cats, which can be bought at most convenience stores in Japan.
I just love these! They are so addicting to read, and if you're a learner of
Japanese, very good language practice. ねこぱんち(neko punch) and ねこふ
に(neko funi) are well known. Some of the issues even come with little gifts
or "furoku". Like bookmarks, band-aids(hahaha) and stickers.Another
favorite of mine is a manga called Chi's Sweet Home . It is about a little
grey tabby kitten who can't find his mother, and is adopted by a nice family
with a little boy named Youhei. The family then decides on the name Chi for
the kitten. There is also an anime which is also very good. I think an
english version for the manga is available, but I can't be sure.
Simply adorable

cute tote bag
A few days ago, it was my birthday
I turned 22. It's kind of weird getting
older, I don't think of myself as 22...more like around 18.
Here is a birthday
present I got from my uncle, isn't it cute?
I have been looking for a good tote bag lately, so this was
very nice. The
inside is so soft, and it has inside pockets
too

First blog!
Well, I've finally gotten around to creating a blog! I have been wanting to
make a blog for a awhile now, but one thing led to another and it didn't
happen as soon as I hoped. Recently I have been studying for the
nursing school entrance exam (Hesi). It has some basic math, which I am not
happy about, but at least it's not algebra *sigh* I'll probably take the exam
in the spring of next year, so I have plenty of time
Wish me luck~!

About Me

Toybox
I'm a 22 year old girl who is currently a student trying to get into nursing school. I have a calico kitty named Mike (pronounced meekeh, a popular name for calico cats in Japan), whom I love very much, although she can be very mean!
I am a very friendly, but quiet, person, and I am always open-minded about learning new things and about different cultures. For about 6 years, I have been studying Japanese which you could say is one of my past times. I have actually lived in Japan and gone to high school and college for 3 semesters for a total of about a year.
I currently live with my parents, brother, and my uncle.
Some of my hobbies are: web design, making stuffed animals, cooking, pixeling, and of course, studying Japanese.
Favorite color: pink, all pastel colors
Favorite food: sushi, cold sandwiches, cucumbers and sweets
Favorite music: J-pop. Especially Ai Otsuka, ,EXILE,GreeeeN,Utada Hikaru,Rie Tanaka,Hanako Oku,Home Made Kazoku and more : D I also enjoy J-trance, and anime music. Other than Japanese music, I like Daft Punk, 80's music, and 90's dance music
Favorite anime/manga: Azumanga Daioh, Lucky Star, Di Gi Charat, Pita Ten ( I love all of Koge Donbo's work!)
Favorite Japanese doramas(drama): LIFE, Daisuki!, 1 Litre of Tears (very sad..), 14 Sai no Haha, Akai Ito, Koizora
Favorite games: I love my Nintendo DS! I like to play, Harvest Moon, Pokemon Soul Silver, Taiko no Tatsujin, Pop n' Music, Sims 2, Katamari Damacy, and the MMORPG, Mabinogi
Favorite movies: Lost in Translation, all of the Studio Ghibli(Hayao Miyazaki) films, especially Tonari no Totoro
Current obsession: anything kawaii/Japanese, kao ani, cute pixels, San-X(tarepanda!), Q-Lia, and of course, JAPAN~
Likes/Dislikes: I love anybody who is sweet, kind, and understanding of other people's feelings. A gentle, fun-loving personality is something I admire.
A judgemental and insensitive trait is one that ticks me off. I also HATE racism and ignorance. As for other things, I don't like tomatoes, tofu, and I basically can't eat grapefruit! I also dislike most actresses/singers(britney spears, disney channel stars, etc.) because they set a bad example for young girls, making them think they have to look a certain way to be accepted.

Chocolate Cornet
Here is how to make a chocolate cornet as seen on the anime, Lucky Star They are so good and I recommend you try them!
INGREDIENTS:
2 egg whites
½ cup sugar
1/3 cup sifted flour
3 tablespoon butter, melted and cooled
For the cream filling:
1 ¼ cups whole milk
2 oz. semi-sweet, melted
3 egg yolks
¼ cup granulated sugar
1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
1 1/2 teaspoons cocoa powder
2 tablespoons plus 2 teaspoons cornstarch
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
PREPARATION:
Preheat your oven to 400 degrees. Beat the egg whites til stiff, sprinkle the sugar over them and fold over gently. Fold in the flour and the butter in the same way. Butter and flour a baking sheet, then heat it up in your pre-heated oven.
Drop the batter onto the hot baking sheet by tablespoons and spread thinly.
Bake for about 3 minutes, and the wafers are gently golden. Be careful not to burn yourself!
Quickly take the wafers from the sheet with a spatula, and while still warm, roll into cones. If they cool too quickly and become brittle, return them to the oven briefly. Fill with cream filling, let them cool and enjoy!
Cream filling:
In a small saucepan, warm the milk over low heat until it is just hot enough to steam. While the milk is warming, whisk together the egg yolks, sugar, flour, cocoa powder, and cornstarch until the mixture is completely smooth.
Once the milk is steaming, add the melted chocolate to it and whisk until it is fully incorporated into the milk. Add half of the chocolate milk, whisking constantly, to the egg mixture. Add the milk and eggs back into the hot milk, continue stirring, and heat it for 1-2 minutes, until the custard reaches 170F on a digital thermometer and is very thick. Remove from the heat, stir in the vanilla extract, and chill before filling pastry.
This chocolate pastry cream recipe makes approximately 2 cups flavored cream.

About my site
After having studied and practiced HTML over the past 6-7 years, I have finally created Harmony Dreams! I hope to learn a lot more about web design, and improve my site.
Although I don't have much on my site right now, of course I plan to add more as I come up with ideas. While thinking of what to call my site,I wanted to name it something that would give visitors peaceful thoughts. Finally,
"Harmony Dreams" came to mind. I started this site because of my desire to show my love for everything Japan to the world!
